Of all the railway photographs that i've taken over the years, it will always be this one that reminds me of all those happy days in the sunshine as a kid sat on Marsh Lane road bridge here. At this time the tracks off to the left by the signal box were freight only, the Lincoln allocated Derby 1956 built class 114 dmu is passing with a New Mills Central-Sheffield local service, 14th August 1983. Passing New Mills South Junction on the 18th April 1984 is a Hull Botanic Gardens (BG) based 1960 Swindon built class 124 Trans Pennine dmu with a Manchester Piccadilly-Hull Paragon service. These units were all taken out of service the following month and their duties taken over by class 31/4 locomotive hauled services. Andrew J Crowther.

A Class 108 DMU with 54230 closest and 53947 had recessed onto the stub of the Hayfield branch to the otherwise disused tunnel at New Mills Central whilst an express passes, it now returns to the station to form the next local service to Manchester Piccadilly, 27-10-84. On Tour With the Class 13 Army.

Permanent way work at the once 4 tracked Buxworth cutting, just south of New Mills South Junc on the Hope Valley line, sees 37079 (D6779) stationary on a ballast train, whilst a class 108 comes past wrong line with a local service to Sheffield. on today's railway this would mean Rail Replacement buses. 24th February 1985. Gloucester Railway Carriage & Wagon 1959 built Class 128 parcels unit M55994 is seen tagged into the rear of the 13.29 Manchester Piccadilly-Buxton service, which was worked by class 104 units M53456, M59230, M53504. At New Mills Newtown, 10th April 1985. Andrew J Crowther.

Set: BX482

On 7th July 1985, coming out of the New Mills turn back tunnel, as we called it as it was used to turn back the 2 car dmus back to Manchester, is a Buxton "White Roofed" allocated BRC&W dmu BX482 (M53507, M59195, M53429), officially called Hayfield Tunnel it was the start of the 2.5 mile branch to Hayfield which closed to all traffic on 03/01/70, the tunnel is 197 yards long and was only half bricked up at the other end. Today the tunnel is trackless but the tunnel mouth is still there, at the other end of the tunnel is the start of the Sett Valley trail which is on the old track bed to Hayfield. Andrew J Crowther.

An unidentified Derby built class 108 dmu rolls into New Mills Central with a local train from Sheffield, 7th July 1985. Just about in view is the New Mills turn back tunnel, as we called it as it was used to turn back the 2 car dmus back to Manchester, is Buxton "White Roofed" allocated BRC&W dmu BX482. Passing New Mills South Junction signal box (still open June 2016), as seen from a Buxton allocated Derby built class 108 dmu, operating the Summer Sunday only Buxton-New Mills Cental-Buxton Peak Rail Rambler service. The three chimneys in the centre of the photo mark the the spot of the world famous sweet manufacturer and New Mills based Swizzels Matlow, whose brands include, which i'm sure we've all had, "Dumsticks", "Refreshers" and "Love Hearts" to name a few. 7th July 1985.
